Credentials
Janet has her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Delaware and her Masters in Art Therapy from the University of New Mexico. She is board certified through the national Art Therapy Certification Board and is a Licensed Practicing Art Therapist in the state of Kentucky. Janet is a member of the American Art Therapy Association and the Kentucky Art Therapy Association. Our 5 year-old daughter began seeing Janet weekly for Sandplay Therapy after the birth of our second child. She was very happy to be a big sister, but was also dealing with a lot of change at once, and was having daily meltdowns and anger fits. She became more violent, began to have a lot of fear, and started to feel very alone. After even just 2 sessions of seeing Janet, her emotional balancing, fear and anger fits greatly improved. She began to play and feel more joy at home. She began to connect in a safe and gentle way with her baby brother. And when she did feel off, instead of having a meltdown she began to give us drawings of how she felt and talk about it. She saw Janet weekly for months, and now she goes seasonally. The amazing gift Janet has given our child through art, holding space, safety, professional and safe direction and Sandplay literally supported our little girl in one of the most trying times of her life. Teary just writing about it. Thank you Janet, from the bottom of our hearts. |

Art therapy supports and encourages self-exploration through creative expression. When we connect with our non-verbal creative self, we give voice to that which may have no words or can be difficult to verbalize. The creative self is a rich and vast resource which we all possess and can easily access. Art therapy can provide an avenue toward emotional and spiritual wellbeing by helping us to know ourselves more deeply and understand our complex inner workings from that non-verbal perspective. And, prior art experience is not necessary to benefit from art therapy! Anyone can access the non-verbal voice that resides within and art therapy offers a powerful, non-threatening way to explore and communicate those deepest parts of ourselves.
For me, Janet helps me with my healing work. I was told in treatment that my therapy needs to be more active, not just sitting and talking to someone. So the import of doing something active was of the utmost importance for my therapy. As an artist anyway, her work fits me on all levels of my being. After I talk to her, her intuition of what materials to use is always spot on. The space she holds for things to move in a way that’s healthy for me, not too much or too little but just right, is invaluable. She really helps my systems integrate the work in the way that I need- specifically through the right brain because a lot of my trauma in non-verbal. I see Janet weekly, and knowing my sessions are there as a touchstone- I know whatever I’m working through she is always able to help me and be with me in the way I need. |
