Stress Management
through Mind-body Awarenss with Joe Fiala, Ph.D. Stress is the primary cause of sickness both physical and mental. In its helpful form, stress is the way our bodies prepare us to handle life- it prepares us to act. By its nature, stress arises then fades away. Unfortunately placing ourselves under continuous stress can lead to an increase in our stress levels. Stress is a combination of bodily reaction and mental. Fun things as well as challenges cause stress. Ever returned from a vacation saying you need a vacation to recover? Dealing with stress requires awareness and effort. Simple techniques such as body exercises, breathing techniques and mindfulness can be used on the spot to counter or reduce stress. Not only does this feel better, but you can perform better since your mind and body have more energy and resources available. Stress zaps our energy, causes us to lose focus and causes us to close down so it is harder to perform our best. Stress can become a chronic reaction to life so that we are always suffering the mental and physical effects even when stressors are not present. In this series of classes, we will explore the causes of stress and learn simple ways of working with our body, breath and mind to manage our reaction to stressors. If we can recognize our stress and reduce it, we can positively affect the health of our mind and body. Please dress comfortably and bring a blanket or mat as we will do some floor exercises. 5-week Class on Wednesdays 6:30-7:45 p.m., beginning November 18th and running through December 16th. $125.
